Also known as Black Gum or Pepperidge, Tupelo is often found growing in moist soil along streams and rivers. Its wood is used by woodcarvers, for interior parts of furniture, for shipping containers, and in the veneer/plywood industries. It provides habitat for many species of wildlife, its fruit feeds a variety of birds and mammals, and bees make honey from its nectar. Leaves turn bright red in fall. Needs full sun and moist, well-drained soil.
