Full to partial sun, grows in dry upland soils, sandy loam to clay loam. Produces sweet nuts eaten by deer, small mammals and turkeys. One of North America’s most valuable timber oaks, it was once widely used for making barrels and in shipbuilding. Produces highest quality firewood. The red oaks are more susceptible to oak wilt; the white oak is a recommended replacement tree.
